you can put them out on normal garden waste collection days for composting. Otherwise, take
to Recycling Centre or put out the tree on your normal refuse collection day between 9 and 20
January 2012 for disposal. Place the tree next to your bin or sack. Remove all decorations.
During periods of severe weather, please check our website or local radio for service updates.

Timberscombe Gardening Club will be having its inaugural meeting on Monday 5th September at 7.30pm in St Petrock's Church. It is hoped to follow this with a meeting on the first Monday of every month. There will be a small charge of £2 per meeting to cover the costs of the speaker, tea and coffee. The first speaker will be Mr David Wright from Chard who will talk about "The all year Garden". We hope that people will turn out to support this venture: firstly for the interest and expertise that the speaker will bring and secondly for us to be able to exchange ideas and plants and have a general social evening and get-together.

I am pleased to announce that the next walking festival is taking place from Friday 30th September to Monday 3rd October 2011. There are 6 walks each day to choose from, including easier to full day walks.

The autumn walking festival joins with the Exmoor Food Festival (www.exmoorfoodfectival.co.uk) so there are some foodie walks each day to enjoy.

The walks are led by our regular local guides, rangers and wardens who can enlighten you on the countryside through which you walk.

Many music lovers regularly attend this event which offers an excellent family outing with plenty of room for children to play safely. This is a great opportunity to listen to one of Somerset’s best loved Jazz Band playing in a typically beautiful Exmoor setting.

Snowdrop Valley 5th - 27th February

Snowdrop Valley will once again be open from 5th to 27th February. Buses will run from the Rest and Be Thankful car park every half an hour from 10:30am to 4pm with the last bus back from the valley at 4:50pm. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are of course welcome on all buses, as are other dogs. However, in order to ensure comfort for passengers, other dogs will be admitted at the driver's discretion.
The walking route into the valley will be waymarked with snowdrop symbols and visitors should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for winter walking.
Disabled drivers (blue badge holders) and minibus drivers with passengers unable to use the bus service should drive to Wheddon Cross where they will be given a special pass, verbal directions and instructions for parking. A donation towards the running of the scheme would be appreciated.
Refreshments are available at the Moorland Hall. Also the Rest and be Thankful where a full lunch time menu is available as well as morning coffee and afternoon teas.

A PARISH PLAN FOR TIMBERSCOMBE?

Come and find out what it is all about at the January Parish Council Meeting where there will be a presentation about producing a Parish Plan by Keeley Rudd from the Community Council for Somerset. Although the presentation will be made during a Parish Council meeting the idea is to involve other members of the community in finding out the views of villagers.
A community plan aims to involve communities in local decision making and the improvement of services. It provides communities with the opportunity to identify social, economic, environmental and cultural priorities for their area and enables them take on the responsibility for bringing about any improvements they desire, rather than waiting on others to do things for them!

I'm trying to find out more about John Arthur Mease Lomas, a West Somerset artist who lived in Timberscombe in the 1940s and whose gravestone, together with his wife Mary, lies propped up along the wall in St Petroc's graveyard.Mr Lomas had lived and painted in the Porlock area in the 1890s, before his artistic career took off and for the next 20 years, he lived in London and exhibited in the top London galleries.I know little of his life in the 1920s and early 1930s, but he came to Timberscombe sometime in the late 1930s where he lived, and painted, until his death in 1950. He died at Cosy Cot, CowbridgeThe Free Press obituary notice in 1950 mentions that among the mourners was a Mrs Ferris from Timberscombe. I don't suppose there are any members of the Ferris family still living in the village?I have a copy of a letter from Ken Grabham, of Mayfield, Cowbridge, from the 1990s, with a few memories of Mr Lomas. In it, he talks of a Mr Frank Huxtable building in 1939 a wooden bungalow up Great House Street, which became Mr Lomas's studio - it had a large room with a big wondow, clearly ideal for an artist. I don't know Timberscombe too well, but I assume that this Studio is not the same building as Cosy Cot, Cowbridge, where Mr Lomas died.I think Cosy Cot was owned by a Mr Fred Stevens of Minehead; I have tracked down one member of the Stevens family but he was unable to tell me much about Mr Lomas. I wonder if anyone in Timberscombe can help me? Quite likely not, as it was all a long time ago, but if you don't ask....
