VILLAGE AGENT NEWS

Noticing that a loved one, family member, friend or neighbour is struggling to cope with everyday tasks is something that most of us encounter at some point, but starting the conversation can be tricky and concern may be taken for criticism.  Often it is just a little extra help that is needed.  Asking a leading question that can reveal what your relative or loved one is struggling with can help;

“Is there anything around the house you need help with?”

“Is the cooker/fridge working okay?”  This could lead to a conversation about how they are managing to cook and whether they are eating properly.

“Is the washing machine okay?  How often do you do laundry?”  This could reveal issues with personal care.

Give specific examples of things you have noticed and suggest possible solutions:

“What would make life easier for you?”

“I heard of a service that can ....... What do you think?”

It is also now possible to pop in and meet a member of the Adult Social Care team direct without the need to book an appointment by using their drop-in services which are available on the first Tuesday of the month at Becket House, Bridge Street, Williton (10am – 1pm) and on the last Tuesday of the month at The Sanctuary, Watchet (10am – 1pm).

PCSO Linda Brooks will be holding her monthly beat surgery at The Dairy in Timberscombe on 4th August (10:30 – 11:30am), no need to book just pop along and meet Linda and if anyone wants to have a chat with me I will also be there.

Due to the August Bank Holiday there will be no Exmoor Carers Group this month but we will resume again in September.

Please contact me by telephone or e-mail, or a home visit can be arranged.  All advice is free and completely confidential.

Missing Cat

Now returned home safely

Has anyone seen this cat which has gone missing from the Glebe?

If you live in Timberscombe please could you check sheds and garages as she's a very scared cat and is likely to hide herself away if she's become frightened and lost rather than run from something.

She is small, all black and has no collar on and this is very unlike her to stay away from home.

If you think you see this cat please contact Jade at jade.webber@yahoo.com Thank you

Timberscombe Speed Watch needs YOU

Concerned about speeding in our village? The Community Speedwatch scheme trains volunteers from members of the community to get actively involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their village. The scheme itself is run by the Police and the community volunteers. There will be a training session for anybody who is interested on Tuesday 7th June  at 7pm starting in the Village Hall. If you are interested please come along.
Volunteers are trained by the Police to use speed indicator devices which display vehicle speeds. Timberscombe owns its own speed camera. The registered owner of any vehicle seen exceeding the speed limit is sent an advisory letter by the Constabulary, explaining that speeding is unacceptable. Persistent offenders will receive a visit from officers. Areas/times where speeding is identified as an issue will become the target of enforcement work by officers.
How do I become a volunteer?
To find out more about becoming a Community Speedwatch volunteer contact: Emma Savage, Paxholt, Great House Street.,    email elsavage13@yahoo.com    or telephone 07899 285829
How much time will I need to give up?
There is no minimum time. Times will be agreed between Volunteers on when to do a speed check. Checks must be done by a group not  individually.
Do you get training?
Yes full training is given to volunteers by the Police.
Is it safe for volunteers?
Volunteers are given full training and safety equipment to ensure they are clearly visible to road users.
What equipment is used?
Volunteers are provided with high visibility jackets and conduct speed checks using speed indicator devices. The vehicles speed is then displayed on the monitor.
Will records of the offending vehicles be kept?
Information gathered during the checks will be used to target enforcement and education measures. Persistent offenders will receive a visit from officers.

Village Agent News

I received a message from a colleague of mine in Mendip warning of a new scam that is occurring in Somerset at the moment.  Unfortunately a lady contacted her who had fallen victim to this scam and lost her entire life savings.  The victims are contacted by (allegedly) the Metropolitan Police Fraud Team advising them that they have managed to stop a fraudulent transaction on their bank account, but in order to keep the persons money safe they ask the person to remove their money from their bank so it can be handed over to “The Met” to be held in a safe account to be returned at a later date.  This is done over a series of phone calls so the victim is groomed before handing the money over.  The elderly and vulnerable are being targeted.
Somerset Sight’s Mobile Resource Unit will be at the following locations this month.  They offer a brilliant range of services and equipment for those suffering with impaired vision.
Dulverton : Thursday 12th May 10:30 – 12:30 Kemps Way Car Park
Minehead : Thursday 26th May 10:30 – 3:30 Morrisons Car Park
Watchet : Wednesday 4th May 10:30 – 3:30 Coach Park
Finally, due to the May Bank Holiday, there will not be a meeting of The Exmoor Carers Group.  We will however resume in June!
Please contact me by telephone or e-mail, or a home visit can be arranged.  All advice is free and completely confidential.
